About the tournament
Founded in 1877, Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and the only Grand Slam still played on grass, at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Its traditions — the all-white rule, the ivy, Centre Court's roof — make it singular, and the grass produces fast, low-bouncing tennis.
How tickets are sold
Getting in is a story of its own. The Public Ballot is a lottery you enter months ahead for face-value tickets. The Queue releases a set of tickets each day to those who line up in person (many camp overnight). Official resale, hospitality and debentures offer guaranteed premium access. Plan the ballot the year before; otherwise the Queue and official resale are the routes in.
Getting there
The Championships are held in Wimbledon, a leafy, well-heeled corner of southwest London. Central London is a short train ride away, so you can combine the tennis with the full sweep of the city — museums, theatre, parks and more.
Good to know
Late June into early July in London is mild but unpredictable — pack for sun and rain; Centre and No.1 courts have roofs, the outer courts don't. Lean into the ritual: strawberries and cream, Pimm's, and the genteel atmosphere. If you Queue, arrive very early and come prepared.
