Rio Open 2027

Feb 15–21, 2027Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The only ATP 500 in South America and the only ATP event in Brazil. Clay courts at a colonial-era racecourse with the Corcovado on the skyline, evening sessions under lights, and a crowd that behaves more like a football terrace than a tennis audience.

About the tournament

The Rio Open was founded in 2014 and is the biggest tennis tournament in South America. Rafael Nadal won the first edition as world number one. Carlos Alcaraz won it at 18, the youngest champion in its history.

It is played at the Jockey Club Brasileiro, a racecourse in the Gávea neighbourhood, with clay courts built for the tournament each February. Recent editions have set attendance records — the 2025 event drew close to 70,000 spectators across nine days.

The schedule is unusual and worth understanding before you book. Sessions run in the late afternoon and evening, not from late morning as at most tournaments. Early-round days have sessions starting around 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. This is a heat adaptation, and it changes how you plan a day.

The draw is 32 in singles and 16 in doubles. In 2020 it became the first ATP clay event to use electronic line calling.

How tickets are sold

Tickets are sold through the tournament's official site. Sessions are split into afternoon and evening, and are ticketed separately.

Because the schedule runs late, an evening session ticket is the one most visitors want — it carries the featured match and the fuller crowd.

Getting there

The Jockey Club sits in Gávea, in the Zona Sul, between the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas and the Tijuca forest. Ipanema and Leblon are a short ride away, which makes this one of the few tournaments where the obvious tourist base is also the practical one.

Galeão (GIG) handles international arrivals. Santos Dumont (SDU) is the downtown airport and mostly serves domestic routes, but if you are connecting through São Paulo it can be the better arrival point.

February in Rio is high summer: hot, humid, and prone to heavy afternoon rain. The evening scheduling helps with the heat but clay plus rain means delays are a genuine possibility. If you are travelling for a specific match, build in a spare day.

Carnival usually falls in February and sometimes lands near the tournament. When it does, accommodation prices across the city rise sharply and availability collapses. Check the Carnival dates for your year before booking anything.

Good to know

Sessions start late. Play runs into the evening rather than from late morning. Check session times before planning anything else into your day.

It is the only ATP event in Brazil, and the only ATP 500 in South America. For anyone in the region, this is the tour.

Clay plus February rain means delays. Build a buffer day if you are travelling for a specific match.

Check the Carnival dates. Carnival falls in February and when it lands near the tournament, city-wide accommodation prices rise steeply.

The venue is a racecourse. The Jockey Club Brasileiro is a working horse racing venue in Gávea; the clay courts are built for the tournament each year.

The crowd is loud. Brazilian tennis crowds are closer to football crowds than to Wimbledon. If you want silence between points, this is not the tournament.

Dates follow the 2027 tour calendar and can shift — confirm on the official site before booking travel.
